“The idea of a dragon was taking root in my mind as I was modelling, and then I created a chicken’s beak and the head of a bird. Nevertheless, I began on the plaster mould and the whiteness of that material revealed the dreamlike quality of the statue to me. I love the idea that this Phoenix has emerged from a giant ocean wave.”
