Veronica Franco was a famous courtesan from Venice (1546–1591) who was the mistress of King Henri III of France. She was extremely intelligent and educated, and was a poet. In 1577, she was summoned to appear before the Inquisition who accused her of witchcraft. In the end, she was acquitted…
The statue is a blend of eroticism, fascination and – looking at her position – of submission and discipline.
“There are times when I choose the orientation of my sculpture. In my head, I had a woman whose neck and breasts I could model. Then in the base forms of the clay, I found a mask, and then again, still as if I were digging up a long-lost memory, I thought of citadels and streets, and then I thought of Venice.”
