The one who waits

Story of bronze

The title “The one who waits” is a reference to the novel by Ray Bradbury where a soul is trapped in a well on Mars, waiting for reincarnation. Atéhel’s version is a wise man from an ancient tribe who can contemplate the stars with his eyes closed, ready to take flight.

The one who waits

“The beak first appeared in the clay, then I was careful to incorporate it into a skull, revealing the dignity of the statue. I kept the eyes closed to underscore the emotion that the figure is feeling. The drape which breaks out in geometrical forms on its shoulders provides movement, and the idea that ‘The one who waits’ may well disappear off into the stars…”
