Seh-dong was the “leader” of a squad of female warriors in the Kingdom of Dahomey (now Benin). According to her contemporaries, she was not only powerful, but also astoundingly beautiful, so much so that many a man bowed before her.
Leading an army of two thousand Amazons, she forced the French troops to retreat in 1822.
“My hands were plunged into the clay and working on a drapery at the bottom of a bust when a long neck surfaced, and a female warrior was brought to life before my very eyes.”
